Light Up for Children

The Young Lights Adventure is helping children and young people to grow their confidence, resilience and self-esteem, and to overcome the effects of bullying and other difficulties.
In short – to feel better and do better in all areas of life.

What is the Young Lights Adventure and who is it for?

It would be easy to simply state that it’s a set of practical life tools for children, young people and the young at heart. And that’s really doesn’t start to scratch the surface!

It’s for teachers and group leaders who have the job of inspiring young people.
It’s for schools with a responsibility for teaching children to be self-confident – as well as safe-guarding, resilience and dealing with a myriad of pressures as young people learn to navigate life.
It’s for home-educators, focused on ensuring that the young people in their care are equipped with the best tools to build healthy connections and strong foundations.
It’s for child welfare agencies, social services, foster parents and everyone answerable to ensuring the best care for less advantaged children.
It’s for parents who are concerned about their children

Most importantly, it’s for every child who has ever questioned whether they are enough.

The Young Lights Adventure is for parents, teachers, home schoolers, group leaders and anyone connected with children and young people – including the young at heart.

You can watch (and share) all fourteen animated videos for free on our app – you’ll also be able to find details about the full facilitation pack.

This is what Sarah Whittle, the first teacher to trial the pack, had to say about her experience of sharing YLA with her class

“We were remote learning through TEAMS when we started Young Lights … I believe it was precisely these tools which fortified their resilience during those testing times … now they all shine so brightly I feel I should be teaching in sunglasses!

The tools and techniques that form the Young Lights Adventure are simple to grasp, easy to remember and practical to implement. They provide a universal way for people – adults and children – to tap into and harness their own personal resources, and to connect, share and grow together.

Children are introduced to simple ideas and practical tools that will give them helpful habits and life skills, and new ways of being and looking at life.

These animated videos and the lesson plans to bring each one to life, encourage children to grow:

emotional resilience – calming anxiety, growing the ability to deal with stress
self confidence – boosting the ability to learn and to thrive
empathy – connecting with and understanding the people and world around us
empowerment – fostering self-reliance, self-worth, a deep belief that we can achieve whatever we choose to achieve
safeguarding – becoming aware of unhealthy situations and taking appropriate action
certainty – navigating life, resisting peer pressure, maintaining our own boundaries, trusting in who we are and our own personal values.

What’s in the full facilitation package?

The entire course includes:

Fifteen overview videos from Mel Pledger and Sharon Bott. These are just for you, as the guide on this adventure, to watch. The first gives an outline of the pack. Then fourteen further videos give an overview of each session and suggest practical activities you can share with your children.
Fourteen animated videos to watch with your children. Each one describes a different technique to help navigate the game of life. These techniques are for everyday use and can be explored and revisited any time and any place. At the breakfast or dinner table, in the car, walking the dog – anywhere you can imagine! (The full script for each video is also included.)
Facilitation guidelines for each of the videos: ideas and suggestions to help you bring each of the sessions to life, in ways that feel good for you and your children. There’s an Adventure Sheet PDF for each session that you can print off if you choose!
Community support comes in the form of the Young Lights Adventure in-app community – available when you access this course via the app store. Here you can share your experiences, ask questions, access updates, and find other additional resources that will add to as we grow together.
One-to-one support and encouragement is always available from the Young Lights Adventure team, be it via text, message, call or video catch up. To start with you may choose to check in with us on a regular basis, just until you get the hang of it all. Or you may find you’re already feeling lit up, confident and ready to dive in! Whatever works for you, we’re here by your side every step of the way.

This package is not just for teachers. Anyone can dive into the Young Lights Adventure without any kind of specialist training or experience. The only prerequisite is that you are familiar with the Light Up journey yourself before embarking on sharing the YLA pack with others.

If you’re interested in one-to-one support for parents and children, or bespoke solutions for schools, charities, colleges, universities or groups, we’d love to hear from you.
